The people will have their say July 2 as 14 music acts compete in the Amador County Fair Foundation's "Amador Fair Aid." Sponsored by KVGC AM 1340, the Ledger Dispatch and TSPN

Following the Trucks, Tractors and Trikes Parade in lovely downtown Plymouth at 11 am, this people's choice competition will decide which of 14 Smokin Hot Local music acts will be named Amador's favorite band.

Be part of the fun, help support the Amador County Fair. Come on out and enjoy the competing bands include Forever Goldrush, In Deep, FreeZeout, , Crystal Image, Race to the Bottom, Unkl Bean and Hot Rod Red, Full Funky Gorilla, The Slade Rivers Band featuring Tex Pickens, Enve, Greenroom, 1Avenue Saints, Off the Record, Garage Jazz Architects, and Meghan O'Keefe.

Popular vote of the audience will determine the winner. Attendees 13 and older will receive a ballot asking the voter to rank the bands by first, second and third choice. Ballots will be turned in at the end of the evening and the winners will be announced. The grand prize winner will return to play a set at the Amador County Fair on July 31.

In addition to the music, Fair Aid will have FREE carnival rides for the kids, a giant water slide, food and drink booths, and other family-friendly activities. Guests can bring their own picnic baskets, please, no outside alcohol.

The event will be held at the Amador County Fairgrounds this Saturday July 2nd from noon until sundown. Admission is $15 for attendees 13 and older, who will receive ballots asking them to rank the bands by first, second and third choice. Children 12 and under get in free, although they will not be given ballots. You can listen live on Amador Counties Favorite KVGC AM 1340 Hometown Radio. Amador Fair Aid is a fundraiser for the Amador County Fair, which takes place July 28 thru 31.

The Amador County Fair began in 1938. In the past some funding has always come from State funds generated by horse-racing while the majority of funds are generated by our own activities and donations of property, cash and talent. With the horse-racing funds depleted, the State is now threatening to cut all support for county fairs.

California Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 95 (AB95) March 24, completely eliminating funding for the California fair network. Without additional sources of revenue, more than 30 fairs, including Amador's, are threatened with closure.

Fairs generate revenue and AB95 will reduce that income to the State's General Fund by impacting jobs, income taxes and sales taxes generated by the fair network. Amador's Fair brings in more than $3.5 million in spending activity for the region, $29,000 in business-tax revenue, and $110,000 for local non-profit groups, as well as provides jobs for local residents.

Mormon Helping Hands Make A Difference

Thanks to the many Mormon Helping Hands who helped the Amador County Fair this past April 30, 2011.

Sunny skies and many happy hands make a large job seem small.
Crews painted the grandstand seats in the Benny Brown, installed baby changing stations in the midway restroom, repaired walkways, landscaping and so much more.

As the network of California Fairs struggle to adjust to deep funding cuts from the State of California these kinds of efforts are even more important.

Amador County Fair recognized with top industry honors for 'It's a Jungle Out There'

The 2010 Amador County Fair has been recognized in eight categories in the annual Western Fair Association Achievement Awards competition.

As reported in the Ledger Dispatch the Amador County Fair chalked up three first- and a third- place winners the fair's marketing and communication pieces for the Amador County Fair's 2010 "It's A Jungle Out There" theme. WFA is composed of member fairs and large special events in the western United States, plus major shows in Canada. The Amador County Fair competed against other fairs of similar size.

Top honors went to poster art by Rand Huggett, and the KSEG radio commercial. Other awards were for newspaper ads, display advertising and direct mail, plus the fair's recreational vehicles policies handbook and the Junior Livestock Auction Policy Handbook.

CEO Troy Bowers and board members Robert Manassero, Frank Halvorson, Ciro Toma, Marilyn Hoopes, Chuck Simmons, Jeannie Deaver, Mike Boitano and Jan Howard were on hand at the annual achievement awards dinner to receive the awards, all decked out with purple hats and boas, the favorite color of former CEO Susan Clark, who was inducted into the WFA Hall of Fame.

Looking forward to another award-winning fair, the 2011 event will aim to catch the eye of the judges in the next competition. "Dancing with the Steers" is the new theme.

Did you know that it is illegal to simply throw an unwanted television or computer monitor in the trash in California? Electronic items have toxic elements that are environmentally hazardous when they are dumped into landfills. By law, such products must now be recycled properly and in ways that won’t harm the environment

The Amador County Fair is here to help! Bring your electronic waste to Amador County Fair, broken or unbroken. There is no limit on how many items you can bring to recycle, and it is FREE of charge. Acceptable items include anything with a plug, but nothing with Freon i.e. refrigerators, freezers, etc. No batteries of florescent light bulbs please!

Amador County Fair to Kick-off Huell Howser's California's Golden Fairs

Huell Howser, television personality best known for California’s Gold, the PBS travel show has been working with the California Division of Fairs and Expositions on a new project called California’s Golden Fairs. The series features 11 California Fairs, the interesting people and fantastic events held at California fairs each year. The original plan was to roll out the series in the Spring of 2011.

Huell is so excited about the project that he will “sneak preview” six episodes on PBS stations throughout California starting this September. The first episode of the sneak preview to air will feature the Amador County Fair on KVIE, Sacramento, Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 7:00 PM and again on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 8:00 PM. Check your local listing for times in your area. All shows aired in this sneak preview will be shown again as a part of the spring 2011 series.

Huell will feature 11 California Fairs including, Amador County Fair, Marin County Fair, Calaveras County Fair, Trinity County Fair, Riverside County Fair and Indio Date Festival, San Diego County Fair held at Del Mar, El Dorado Fair, Alameda County Fair, Monterey County Fair, Nevada County Fair, and the Big Fresno Fair. Huell Howser Productions will produce a compilation episode focusing on the rich history and relevance of all California fairs.

Safari Pre-Fair Kick Off BBQ Saturday, July 24

The Foundation is a newly formed not-for-profit corporation chartered for the purpose of supporting and benefiting the community building and educational projects of the Amador County Fair.

In just two years the Foundation has become the holding organization for the Miss Amador Scholarship Pageant; completed phase one of the Benny Brown Arena View Stand refurbishment; with Simmons Landscape helped in creating the new Kidz Corral; adopted a tractor; purchased shade umbrellas; and the Foundation has begun the process of replacing the Livestock Area Restroom and Shower.

Mormon Helping Hands at the Amador County Fair

119 volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fanned out Saturday, May 8 across the Amador County Fairgrounds to help spruce up what has been neglected due to the California budget crisis.

Crews wearing yellow “Mormon Helping Hands” vests rolled up their sleeves to help paint, repair and groom numerous sites on the Fairgrounds. Volunteers repaired the leaky roof and installed waterless urinals in the Spur Emporium, painted the Horse Barns, Windmill Restaurant, First Aid Building, Privy Restrooms, repaired gates to the Benny Brown Arena, raked debris and pulled weeds around the Floriculture Building.

“A wonderful opportunity to serve our local community” said Hack Severson, Chairman for the Jackson Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mormon Helping Hands project. “Our members enjoyed giving back to the community and the Amador County Fair.” “And they had fun.”

“It’s amazing what was accomplished in just 8 hours,” said Robert Manassero, President of the Amador County Fair Board of Directors, “they helped us catch up on years of deferred maintenance that we were unable to get to due to budget cuts.”

These services include: parent education classes, therapeutic counseling, parent aide/home visitors, parent teen communication classes, baby steps classes, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for dependents of the court, PCIT (Parent Child Interaction Therapy), and mentoring. Amador County Fair Wine Competition Results Are In

The Amador County Fair competition is one of the most notable in the state, with many of the judges’ selections for awards going on to win at the California State Fair.

Judging was held on May 30 and winemakers whose wines received a gold, silver, or bronze award were invited for sampling during the Amador County Wine Tasting, Friday, July 31 at 7:00 pm. The admission price is $25 per person, including a dated souvenir glass and appetizers. Tickets are limited and can be purchased from the Fair office until the day of the event, as long as they are available. For more ticket information, call the Amador County Fair at 209 245-6921.

Quality Assurance Program Set for June 20, 2009

Amador County Fair to host Dr Celina Johnson, California State University, Chico College of Agriculture, June 20, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to noon in Pokerville Hall. Learn the latest information on the H1N1 Virus and your role as a livestock producer.

Dr Johnson will be presenting the Youth Quality Assurance Program in cooperation with the California Exposition and State Fair, California Department of Food and Agriculture and the Division of Fairs & Expositions. This program defines your responsibilities as a youth livestock producer and qualifies exhibitors to show at the California Exposition and State Fair.

Dr Johnson will provide information on food safety hazards including; 1) Microbial contamination such as the H1N1 virus, E. coli and salmonella; 2) Chemical hazards such as drug residues; and 3) physical hazards including broken needles and bruising. We will be discussing practices that relate to food quality and production of a high quality project animal.

Swine pre-weigh suspended for 2009

Because of concerns about the H1N1 virus (Swine Flu) the Amador County Fair is suspending the swine pre-weigh requirement for the 2009 Fair. Swine exhibitors or their representatives are required to go to the pre-weigh at the fairground on May 31, 2009 between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to pick up the ear tag for their pig.

Please do not bring your hog to the fairground on May 31. Pigs will still be shown at the Fair and the Junior Livestock Auction will take place as in previous years.

Entries are now being accepted for the popular Miss Amador scholarship competition scheduled for July 30th at the Amador County Fair on the Central House Stage.

Young women ages 16 – 23 have the opportunity to compete for scholarships and to represent Amador County and the Fair as ambassadors throughout the year. The women compete in the areas of community service and fair experience, a personal and fair industry interview focusing on the entrant’s sense of value, attitudes, goals and aspirations, communication skills before a live audience, and an on-stage presentation.

Scholarship awards will be: $2,000 to Miss Amador, $1,000 to the First Runner-Up, $750 to the Second Runner-Up, and $500 to the Third Runner-Up.

Entry forms for the pageants are available on-line at amadorcountyfair.com or from the Amador County Fair office at Sherwood and School Streets in Plymouth. They can also be found at local high schools. Completed entry forms are due in the Fair office by May 1, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. or more information call the Fair office at 209 245-6921.

The 2008 Amador County Fair has been recognized with multiple awards in the annual Western Fair Association (WFA) Achievement Awards competition. No less than six first, and five second place wins were chalked up by the Fair’s marketing and operations programs for the 2008 Barnyard Mardis Gras Fair. WFA is composed of member fairs and large special events in the western states of Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, Texas, Minnesota, Indiana, New Mexico, Alaska and Hawaii, plus three major shows in Canada. The Amador County Fair competed against other Fairs of similar size.

They also received second place awards for the overall marketing program and print advertising designed by Fair publicist Karen Spencer, the Fair Guide produced by the Ledger Dispatch, the poster by Rand Huggett, Fair Sponsor Involvement and the Fair’s Conservation Program.

The Amador County Fair Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 publicly supported corporation. The purpose of the foundation is to make it possible for community members and businesses to support improvements to the county fair and receive a tax benefit for their donations. In addition to physical improvements of the fair facilities, the Foundation will focus on promoting educational/agricultural and leadership opportunities for area youth. Amador county community members and business owners can support the foundation’s efforts by becoming an annual or lifetime member of the foundation.

Amador County Fair Foundation’s Inaugural Event A Huge Success
“Love A Fair Ball” Kicks off the Foundations Fundraising Efforts

Plymouth, Amador County, California, February 23, 2009….A shared love for the Amador County Fair brought together over 200 people on Valentine’s Evening for the inaugural event of the Amador County Fair Foundation the “Love A Fair Ball”. The evening, which included a prime-rib dinner catered by Thomi’s in Jackson and the lively 40’ era music of “Sister Swing” was a great success by all accounts. “It’s really amazing how generous this community is even in such difficult economic times,” says Susie Clark the Foundation’s Treasurer, “We couldn’t have asked for a better start for our foundation both as a fundraiser/membership drive and opportunity to bring community awareness to the foundation’s goals.”

The Fair’s own Pokerville Hall was transformed for the evening into an enchanting atmosphere of Silver, Pink and Black. Guests took the opportunity to dust off their formal attire and dancing shoes making the evening even more elegant than most would have imagined.

In addition to the wonderful meal and music, attendees had the opportunity to win three fabulous prizes in the evening’s raffle including a very valuable gold coin, complete set of Cooper tires and the ultimate all-inclusive fair package. Proceeds from the event including the raffle and membership drive will help the foundation fund the many projects they have ahead. Rally for Prospect Motors January 10 at High Noon

As most of you are aware GMAC, the financing company for GM has frozen the credit for Prospect Motors that resulted in the closure of the car dealership owned by the Frank Halvorson family for over 25 years.

I am asking for your help. As Prospect Motors and the Halvorson family has stepped up and contributed so much to this community I am asking for you to step up. Let us not forget their contributions to our community and families including purchasing animals at the Junior Livestock Auction, sponsorships for the Fair and leadership as a long time Director of the Amador County Fair. This is just a small sample of how the Halvorson family has contributed to Amador County.

At HIGH NOON this Saturday, January 10, there will be a GIANT SUPPORT RALLY in the Prospect Motors parking lot. Gather up everyone you know, put on your 4-H, FFA or Grange uniform, make signs, bring a banner and come out and show your support for the Halvorson Family.

Help spread the word. Text message, email, call, help pass out flyers. Get everyone you know to attend this photo-op and show the world how Amador County supports Frank Halverson and his family. There will be lots going on including the combined marching bands from the high schools.

The Amador County Fair Board of Directors announces “A Grape Time to Hukilau” as the theme for the 2009 Amador County Fair, July 30 through August 2.

Amador County Fair Board President, Janice Howard announced today that flower leis, hula skirts and fun will set the mood, as well as recognize Amador grape growers and wine makers at the 2009 Amador County Fair July 30 through August 2. “We are all very excited about this years theme “A Grape time to Hukilau” “I can’t wait to see the decorations and fantastic fun ideas that our exhibitors, staff and community will come up with for this year’s Amador County Fair.

“We always look for a fun theme that our staff can decorate around, we can create contests for, and can include in our entertainment so that we can keep things fresh for fair visitors to enjoy,” explains Sherrie Elliot, Amador County Fair office manager.

In choosing the theme, the board appreciated the meaning of a Hukilau as the gathering of the ancient Hawaiians for a common purpose. Just as the Amador County Fair is a large gathering and celebration of friends and family working together for a common goal, the ancient Hawaiians would gather a large number of people, usually family and friends, to work together to catch fish and enjoy a festive beach gathering.

In that same spirit of working together and sharing the bounty, the Amador County Fair community works together to raise funds for community service groups including local 4-H and FFA Chapters, Jackson Lions Club, Jackson and Plymouth Foothills Rotary and other civic minded organizations, too many to list here.

As the Amador County Fair begins planning for the 71^st edition of the annual summer gathering it’s important to remember that the Amador County Fair is the World’s #1 Small County Fair and the largest community event in Amador County.

A Hukilau is a way of fishing invented by the ancient Hawaiians. The word comes from Huki, meaning pull, and lau, meaning leaves. A large number of people, usually family and friends, would work together in casting the net from shore and then pulling it back. The net was lined with ki leaves, which would help scare the fish into the center of the net. Consistent with the Hawaiian subsistence economy, anybody that helped could share in the catch.

A Hukilau is also known to local Hawaiians as a festive beach gathering.
